Increase your Oil Painting Skills or learn from scratch in Personalized classes. A comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, nurturing the artist within. Limited to 10 students (young adults to seniors), allowing close attention and guidance. A four-week series

Who is Laurel Sherrie?
I am an oil painter and live in rural Arroyo Grande, where I paint “plein-air” (French for Open Air or painting outdoors) and in my studio.
I love painting on location, which fosters an intense involvement with the landscape. Nature is my passion & inspiration. California landscapes are precious and are diminishing, and my mission is to inspire people to save what we have.
I have been teaching private lessons for several years, and this year I am offering a Summer Series of group classes, limited to 10 students, small enough to get a lot of personal attention. Any skill level is welcome, even those who have never picked up a brush. Differing from a workshop or large class environment, each student gets personalized attention and works at their level of skill.

The Classroom: Located at the Arroyo Grande Hall, at the corner of Branch Street and Route #227, just outside the historic Village of Arroyo Grande, the room is well lit and roomy.

Art Instruction: There is one major pre-requisite to becoming an artist, and that is the desire. With a strong motivating force to move toward a goal, one will get one there. As in most professions, there are specific skills to be mastered. In painting some of these skills are drawing, color harmony and composition. It’s important to find someone who is not only skilled at their own art, but who is also an excellent teacher.

Among the qualities I consider essential in an art teacher are:
1. Good at painting and drawing themselves
2. A sequential program with well-written materials to which the student can refer
3. Clarity of presentation so there is complete student understanding
4. Encouragement which fosters perseverance in the student
5. A cheerful demeanor and a good sense of humor
6. Constant awareness of the student without unnecessary interference or interruption
Observing whether a student understands or not. Then corrections can be made as soon as possible without mistakes piling up
7. The teacher is actively creating their own artwork

For this class, young adults, adults and seniors are welcome. I will tailor the classes to each student, making sure they have understanding of the basics needed to create great paintings. These basics are relevant whether the student has a goal to paint realistically or abstractly. The basics will provide the foundation. Good drawing is the vital basic to any artwork and needs to be mastered before painting skills are undertaken. I can also teach drawing in a separate class for students who would like to master this skill.

During class, classical music or quiet New Age music will provide a serene background. We will have coffee and tea and cookies available to assuage the hunger and thirst of the creative! Classes are limited to ten students, once each week, three hours long, a series of four lessons over four weeks. Assignments will be given for students to work on in their own time.

I would be happy to meet with prospective students (and their parents, if the student is a young person) to help determine what the student needs and wants, so call and schedule a free interview with me to see if my classes are right for you! You can also print out the Registration Form included with this newsletter and mail it to me. Feel free to contact me with any questions at 805-473-4640.

A Saturday Summer Series of classes is also being arranged for those who cannot attend on a weekday.

Happy Painting!
